Here we have a cover that promises less than the book delivers. Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars, didn’t wear any clothes, nada, zilch. Just a belt to hold her sword. Barsoomian broads bare their bazooms. I, at an early age, read the earlier stories in older borrowed paperbacks with covers like above. When I bought the later books, Frazetta had done the covers and I had to hide them from my mom. Frank knew Burroughs was kinky, it took Farmer to make it perverse.
Lucas is a big fan of Burroughs, desert planets, banths (George made um hephalumps instead of lions), Barsoom is ruled by jedaks, all kinds of things. It’d be hard to find a SF writer or movie maker that wasn’t influenced by ERB. Many physicists, astronomers, including Sagan, even astronauts proudly say they were inspired by him. Who can blame them? Who amongst us can say we don’t wanta meet a bare sword bearing princess?
